 Marjoram 

Sweet marjoram is related to oregano. With a more subtle flavor, marjoram has a wide variety of uses in food preparation. This busy little herb looks nice in the garden or in a hanging basket. With a spicy sweet fragrance and clusters of tiny white or pink flowers, marjoram has earned its place in the herb garden. Traditionally, it was grown and placed in every room of the house for protection 

Key Medicinal Uses 

Internally – Sweet marjoram has been used for asthma, headache, indigestion, rheumatism, flatulence, epilepsy and as a relief for labor pains during birth. It has also been used for menstrual pains, anxiety and tonsillitis. Marjoram loosens chest congestion and can be helpful for bronchitis and other respiratory problems. This herb can relieve laryngitis and is safe for children 

Externally – Sweet marjoram has been used for toothache and earache. The oil can be added to liniments to treat sprains and bruises. Marjoram is a natural disinfectant, is antifungal and antibacterial. It is also used as an essential oil in aromatherapy. The oil helps ground people who are feeling hysterical or unstable, especially when their condition is due to an outside stimulus. It also eases rejection and loneliness. It can calm excessive sex drives. The oil also promotes menstruation 

Other Uses – Sweet marjoram can be used in pot pourris and sachets. Marjoram oil is used to scent soap, cosmetics and perfumes. It is also used primarily as a culinary herb for salads, meats, vegetable dishes, egg dishes, sauces and more. It can also be put into herb pillows 

Herbs to Combine/Supplement 

Sweet marjoram blends well with mandarin, bergamot, lavender, orange, rosewood, nutmeg, ylang ylang, rosemary, chamomile, cypress, tea tree, cedarwood and eucalyptus essential oils 

Parts Used 

Leaves, flowers – Sweet marjoram's leaves and flowers are the portion used in both cooking and medicine, although the leaves, tender stems and flowers may all be eaten 

Preparation and Dosage 

Infusions are a common method of taking marjoram. To make one, pour one cup of boiling water over ¼ cup of fresh herb (or 2 teaspoons of dried herb) and let it stand for 5 minutes. Strain the herbs out, then it is ready to drink. It can be sweetened with a bit of honey if desired 

To make a lotion, place the fresh herb in olive oil and set the jar in the sun for two to three weeks
